Just In Time Teaching: One year of JiTT in Organic Chemistry
I attended the 2016 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO and gave an invited talk titled "Just In Time Teaching: One year of JiTT in Organic Chemistry" on August 3, 2016.
After attending the 2015 cCWCS workshop on Active Learning in Organic Chemistry, I flipped my Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 courses for the 2015-2016 academic year based on the Just In Time Teaching (JiTT) model. This model required students to read sections in the book, answer a few questions from the online homework system (OWL), and submit a muddiest point question to the instructor before class began. The course was then structured into mini-lectures and problem solving based on the muddiest point questions. After class, students had additional mastery homework in OWL to close the loop on the learning cycle. This presentation seeks to highlight strengths, point out weaknesses, and report on student data and feedback from the year.
